What are Flaps?

These are hinged surfaces, usually at the trailing edge of each wing. When extended, they produce the same amount of lift at slower airspeed. Flaps are used to increase wing lift and reduce the takeoff distance. These increase the total drag of the wing when extended during landing so to reduce landing speed.
