Some quick answers to quick questions related to Aviation. - First post was on March 28 2011 ("What is NASA?"). *********************************************** Note: Almost all of the information I placed here are from compilation of schoolworks which the author/s is/are not indicated so I cannot mention them individually. However, at the back of the book, is a list of its references I placed below (as Default References). The rest, I got from the internet or dictionaries that I indicate as sources. I am not a know-all in this field. I just read, summarize, and post. Thanks for visiting!

What are Slats?

Slats, also known as Leading Edge Devices, are extensions to the front of a wing for lift augmentation, and are intended to reduce the stalling speed by altering the airflow over the wing. Slats may be fixed or retractable - fixed slats (e.g. as on theFieseler Fi 156 Storch) give excellent slow speed andSTOLcapabilities, but compromise higher speed performance. Retractable slats, as seen on most airliners, provide reduced stalling speed for take-off and landing, but are retracted for cruising.

The actual effects of the slat are (according to Wikipedia):

  • The slat effect: The velocities at the leading edge of the downstream element (main airfoil) are reduced due to the circulation of the upstream element (slat) thus reducing the pressure peaks of the downstream element.

  • The circulation effect: The circulation of the downstream element increases the circulation of the upstream element thus improving its aerodynamic performance.

  • The dumping effect: The discharge velocity at the trailing edge of the slat is increased due to the circulation of the main airfoil thus alleviating separation problems or increasing lift.

  • Off the surface pressure recovery: The deceleration of the slat wake occurs in an efficient manner, out of contact with a wall.

  • Fresh boundary layer effect: Each new element starts out with a fresh boundary layer at itsleading edge. Thin boundary layers can withstand stronger adverse gradients than thick ones.

The slat has a counterpart found in the wings of some birds, the alula, a feather or group of feathers which the bird can extend under control of its “thumb”.

Well what can we say? 2015 have passed already! Here are five things that I can remember with certainty:

  1. This is the year when I stopped being a trainer for new ojt’s - for free. Haha.. well because the training program was on it’s starting stage and when it became sustainable, someone else was ready to take the post so I left. No hard feelings about it because I don’t like being surrounded by or getting that much attention from trainees anyway. I am after a more quiet and less crowded environment.
  2. I have changed my mind about leaving a website because of your emails. Thanks! I just can’t think of anything else to say.
  3. My mom and dad are now well. Always pray for those who take care of us.
  4. I believe I, most of the time, was on time for work. Fewer lates this year (at least according to my belief) haha..
  5. I was able to publish/upload only two songs this year but I think they are my favorites so far. I thought I wouldn’t be able to do better after Mahal Pa Rin Kita. Haha.. I hope I really did. I haven’t been on facebook for a while and I have just noticed the unavailability of download option on my page. I already have contacted reverbnation about it so let’s just see what happens then. Meanwhile, you can still download my original songs from my reverbration-hosted music players such as this one, on my homepage, or by visiting my reverbnatinon account.

That’s it! Learn from the mishaps, be thankful for the blessings and press on to a better future. Godspeed, keep safe wherever you are and thanks for your support. Happy New Year!
